Birhane argues that the communities most affected by AI deployment must control its design, development, and governance. Benjamin argues that the problem is structural racism encoded in systems by developers who are not deliberately racist but whose social position makes them systematically blind to the harms they are producing. These two framings suggest somewhat different remedies: community control (Birhane) vs. structural reform of the institutions producing the systems (Benjamin).
