Myth as second-order semiology

Barthes' semiotic model.

Myth today

Roland Barthes (1957) Mythologies: myth is a type of speech, a second-order semiological system. Signifier and signified form a sign (denotation). Myth takes that sign and turns it into a new signifier (connotation) that naturalises ideology. Wrestling is pure spectacle of Justice and Suffering; wine in France is a sign of Frenchness and vitality.
